In today's competitive job market, simply doing great work is often not enough to secure the promotions and opportunities you deserve. One of the most common pieces of feedback professionals receive when they are passed over for a promotion is, "You need to work on your visibility." But what does that mean, and why does it matter?

Why Visibility Matters in the office for Women!

Visibility is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Recognition and Reward: Being acknowledged for your dedication and effort can lead to receiving recognition and appreciation for your hard work. This recognition can open doors to promotions, salary raises, and other opportunities for advancement. So if you don't have this recognition or any reward, then maybe something is off with the visibility of your work.

Take Jane, a marketing manager, for instance; she consistently produced successful campaigns but felt her efforts were not being acknowledged for promotions. However, once she began regularly sharing her campaign outcomes with her team and superiors, she swiftly gained recognition and earned a promotion in just six months.

  1. Influence and Impact: Enhancing your influence within your organization through increased visibility is crucial. Recognition of your ideas and accomplishments can significantly impact decisions and initiatives. So, how many times did you have the feeling that you had an impact on a project or meeting?

Take Myriam, for example, an IT specialist who implemented a new project management tool that boosted team efficiency. By sharing her results in department meetings, she gained influence and was entrusted to spearhead a company-wide rollout.

  1. Career Advancement: Increased visibility can unlock various opportunities, such as promotions, involvement in prominent projects, or transitioning to a new position within your company. When you are recognized and appreciated, it can fast-track your career development. So if you are still stuck in the same position, but you already asked to get promoted, but you never got it...maybe we need to fine-tune your visibility so that you are the one people think of for interesting opportunities and promotions.

For example, Maria, an HR specialist, took the initiative to spearhead a diversity and inclusion project. Her efforts became visible and resulted in her being promoted to the role of Head of Diversity and Inclusion.

  1. Professional Relationships: Building visibility helps you establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, mentors, and peers who can support your career development. So the more you are visible, the bigger your network.

For example, Leila, a junior engineer, regularly attended industry meetups and conferences, where she networked with senior professionals. These connections later helped her secure a mentorship and a significant career opportunity.
